Full-service deck and fence painting

A deck or fence project from Trombley Painting Company starts with deciding on paint vs stain. Stain protects the wood while showing the grain, comes in transparent, semi-transparent, and solid color options, and needs reapplication every two to four years on decks.

Paint covers the grain entirely with a uniform color, lasts longer between recoats (five to seven years on decks), and can hide previous repairs and color variations. We help you decide which is right for the look you want. Either way, we pressure wash, sand, fill any gaps, prime if needed, and apply two coats of the chosen finish.

Deck Painting

The most common outdoor wood painting project. We pressure wash to strip old finish, sand the boards smooth, fill any gaps, prime bare wood, and apply two coats of foot-traffic-rated deck paint.

It takes five to seven years between recoats, depending on use and exposure. Solid color hides aged wood and previous repairs that stain cannot cover.

Fence Painting

Fences face the same UV and moisture exposure as decks, but with less foot traffic. Solid color paint provides full coverage and a uniform look across boards of varying ages or types.

This is common when adding new fence sections to existing fencing, where matching the original wood color is impossible.

Arbors, Pergolas, and Gazebos

Outdoor structures with detailed framing need careful prep around joinery and decorative cuts. Solid-color paint pairs well with stucco or hardboard siding when matching the home’s exterior color palette is the goal.

Sheds and Barns

Outdoor storage structures, from small garden sheds to full barns. Larger barn projects often combine multiple wood types (siding, trim, doors) and need different products for each. We use solid-color barn paint formulated for high-wear outdoor agricultural environments.

Horse and Farm Stables

Working agricultural structures need durable finishes that handle weather, equipment contact, and animal use. Solid-color exterior paint specifically because it covers years of wear, scuffs, and patched repairs that stain cannot disguise. We ensure the chosen paint is color matched to existing farm aesthetic.

Trellises and Garden Structures

Smaller garden features (trellises, garden gates, plant supports) benefit from stain or paint to extend their useful life. Often included as line items on a larger fence or deck project rather than booked as a standalone service.

Outdoor Banisters and Handrails

Outdoor handrails take direct sun, rain, and constant hand contact, which makes them a high-wear item. We sand, prime, and apply two coats of exterior enamel rated for high-touch surfaces. Wood handrails can also be stained instead of painted if you prefer the natural grain look.

Why Choose Trombley Painting Company?

Outdoor wood is its own discipline. The prep is different from interior painting, the products are different, and the timing matters because wood needs to be fully dry between pressure washing and finishing.

We have been doing outdoor wood across San Luis Obispo County since 1976. We know which finishes hold up to inland sun (Paso Robles) versus coastal salt air (Cambria, Morro Bay), and we size the system accordingly.

Deck & fence painting and staining FAQs

For decks and fences specifically, you want a painter who knows the difference between inland and coastal exposure. Trombley Painting Company has been finishing outdoor wood across San Luis Obispo County since 1976. We use different products inland (UV-rated) than coastal (salt-air rated) and we will tell you honestly which makes sense for your home.

A small deck or standard fence runs $1,500 to $3,500. An average deck or larger fence runs $3,500 to $7,000. A large deck plus fence combo or multi-structure project runs $7,000 to $15,000. All quotes include pressure washing, sanding, prep, and two coats.

Stain shows the wood grain, weathers gracefully, and reapplies easily every two to four years. Paint covers everything for a uniform color, lasts five to seven years between recoats, and can hide previous repairs and aged wood. Stain is the more popular choice for newer decks. Paint makes sense for older decks where the wood is no longer attractive.

The best time to stain or paint a deck is between late spring and early fall (May through October). The wood needs to be fully dry before staining or painting, which means waiting at least two to three days after rain. Inland San Luis Obispo County (Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero) has more dry days than the coast, so coastal projects need to be timed around fog and morning marine layer.

Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck stain in transparent, semi-transparent, or solid color depending on the look you want and the condition of the wood. Transparent shows the most grain. Semi-transparent provides more UV protection while still showing grain. Solid is closer to paint but absorbs into the wood. We discuss options during the walkthrough.

Yes. Indoor staining is part of this service line. Common indoor projects include exposed ceiling beams, interior doors, banisters, custom trim, built-in furniture, and accent walls. We use interior-grade stains (Minwax or Sherwin-Williams) with clear protective topcoats.
