Staining Company in San Luis Obispo County and Surrounding Areas

The stain shows the wood grain. Paint covers it. That’s the difference, and it’s the choice every homeowner makes before any wood project begins. Trombley Painting Company handles all wood staining work across San Luis Obispo County: outdoor decks, fences, arbors, pergolas, and barns where the natural grain is part of the look, plus indoor banisters, doors, ceiling beams, exposed timbers, and custom built-ins.

We do not stain kitchen cabinets (those are handled through our Cabinet Painting service). We pressure wash or sand to bare wood, apply transparent, semi-transparent, or solid stain in your color choice, and seal with a protective topcoat.

Three Stain Types, Many Wood Surfaces

Full-service wood staining

A staining project from Trombley Painting Company starts with picking the stain type. Transparent stain shows the most grain and adds minimal color, ideal for newer wood you want to protect without changing its look. Semi-transparent stain shows grain while adding more pigment for UV protection, the most common choice for decks and fences.

Solid stain covers most of the grain while still soaking into the wood, useful for older wood that needs more coverage but not full paint. We bring physical samples to the walkthrough so you can see the actual finished look on your specific wood before committing. Indoor staining uses interior-grade stains with clear protective topcoats. Outdoor staining uses UV-stable products formulated for the substrate and exposure.

The most common outdoor wood staining project. We pressure wash to remove dirt and old finish, sand the boards smooth, and apply transparent or semi-transparent stain that shows the wood grain while protecting against UV and moisture. Standard reapplication every two to four years depending on exposure.

Fences face UV and moisture exposure but with less foot traffic than decks. Stain is the more common choice for fences because it shows the wood grain and weathers gracefully across the long perimeter that fences typically cover. Lasts three to five years between recoats.

Stair banisters and handrails see constant hand contact and need a hard, durable finish. We sand to bare wood, apply stain in your color choice, and seal with a clear protective topcoat formulated for high-touch interior surfaces. Outdoor banisters get UV-stable exterior stain.

Exposed ceiling beams and timber framing in custom homes get stained to bring out the wood grain and color. We prep around adjacent surfaces (drywall, plaster, electrical) carefully. Interior stains with clear protective topcoats. Common in San Luis Obispo County custom builds and wine country estate homes.

Interior wood doors, custom trim, and millwork can be stained instead of painted to show the natural grain. Particularly common with high-end interior doors and original trim in historic homes where the original wood character is part of the property’s appeal.

Built-in bookcases, entertainment centers, library shelving, and custom cabinetry outside the kitchen can be stained or refinished in your color choice. We sand, stain, and seal in place with floor and surrounding surface protection. Kitchen cabinets are handled through our Cabinet Painting service, which uses paint rather than stain.

How Indoor Wood Staining Works

Indoor staining is a different discipline from outdoor staining. The products are interior-grade and low-VOC. The prep is sanding rather than pressure washing. The protective topcoat matters more than UV resistance.

We protect floors, furniture, and adjacent surfaces with drop cloths and plastic, sand the wood to bare grain, apply stain in your color choice, and seal with a clear interior-grade topcoat.

Common indoor projects include exposed beams in custom homes, original wood trim in historic Victorian and Craftsman homes, banisters and handrails, interior doors, and custom built-ins.

How Outdoor Wood Staining Works

Outdoor staining uses UV-stable products formulated for the substrate and exposure. Inland San Luis Obispo County (Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero) gets standard exterior stain. Coastal projects (Morro Bay, Cambria) get marine-influenced stain formulations that resist salt air and mildew.

Decks get foot-traffic-rated horizontal-surface stain. Fences and vertical structures get a standard exterior stain. Barns and agricultural buildings get a solid stain for additional coverage.

The 3-year workmanship warranty covers application issues; UV fading and weathering are normal characteristics of the stain that need periodic reapplication every two to five years.

When You Want the Grain to Show

Why Choose Trombley Painting Company for Wood Staining?

Most San Luis Obispo County painting contractors do paint or stain, not both. We do both because the customer’s choice should not be limited by what the painter is comfortable with. If stain is the right answer for your project, we will tell you.

If paint is the right answer, we will tell you that too. The goal is the right finish for the wood, not the easier finish for the painter.

Wood Staining FAQs

The best staining contractors are painting companies that handle both indoor and outdoor staining. Outdoor stain is a different product set than interior stain, and a contractor who only does one will struggle with the other. Trombley Painting Company has been doing both across San Luis Obispo County since 1976.

A small project (single structure or indoor feature) runs $1,500 to $3,500. An average project (multi-structure or multiple indoor features) runs $3,500 to $7,000. A large or whole-home staining project runs $7,000 to $15,000. All quotes include prep, stain, and protective topcoat where needed.

Depends on what you want to see. Stain shows the grain. Paint covers it. Stain weathers gracefully and reapplies easily every two to four years on decks. Paint covers everything for a uniform color and lasts five to seven years between recoats.

Stain is the better choice for newer wood, decorative structures, and indoor features where the natural grain is part of the look. Paint makes more sense for older wood, structures with significant repair patches, or color-coordination with your home’s siding.

Transparent stain shows the most grain and adds minimal color. Best for newer wood you want to protect without changing its look. Semi-transparent shows grain while adding more pigment for UV protection.

Most common choice for decks and fences. Solid stain covers most of the grain while still soaking into the wood. Useful for older wood that needs more coverage but not full paint.

Yes. Indoor staining is half of our staining work. Common indoor projects include exposed ceiling beams, original wood trim in historic homes, banisters and handrails, interior doors, custom built-ins, and bookcases.

We use interior-grade stains and clear protective topcoats. Kitchen cabinets are handled through our Cabinet Painting service (which uses paint, not stain).

Decks need stain reapplication every two to four years depending on exposure and use. Fences last three to five years between recoats. Inland San Luis Obispo County projects (Paso Robles, Templeton, Atascadero) hit the longer end of these ranges. Coastal projects (Morro Bay, Cambria) hit the shorter end due to salt air and persistent fog accelerating weathering.
